Chapter 48

Praise of Elijah and Elisha

Illustration for Sirach Chapter 48: Praise of Elijah and Elisha

48. Then stood up Elias the prophet as fire, and his word burned like a lamp, who brought a sore famine upon them, and by his zeal he diminished their number, for by the word of the Lord he shut up the heaven, and also brought down fire from heaven thrice, and he delivered Israel out of the hands of the enemies. O Elias, how was you honoured in your marvelous deeds! And who may glory like unto thee? Who did raise up a dead man from death, and from the place of the dead, by the word of the most High? Who brought kings to destruction, and honorable men from their bed? Who heard the rebuke of the Lord from Sinai, and the sentence of judgment from Horeb? Who anointed kings to take vengeance, and prophets to succeed in his room? Who was taken up in a whirlwind of fire, and in a chariot of fiery horses, for he was an example of repentance to all generations, and he shall be in the time of the latter times, to appease the wrath of the Lord, and to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children. Elisha was filled with his spirit, and he did many miracles, and he was not ashamed of the most High, for he was a great man, and he was magnified in his works, for he raised up a dead man from death, and from the place of the dead. For all this the people repented not, neither departed they from their sins, till they were carried away captive out of their own land, and were scattered through all the earth, for they provoked the Lord to anger, and they were forsaken. Only Hezekiah fortified his city, and brought in water into the midst thereof, and dug the rock with iron, and made wells for waters, and in his time Sennacherib came up, and sent Rabsaces, and lifted up his hand against Sion, and boasted proudly, and then were their hearts troubled and afraid, so they called upon the Lord, and the Lord heard them, and sent a mighty angel, and slew a hundred and eighty-five thousand of the Assyrians. For the Lord saved them by the hand of Isaiah the prophet, who was a great man, and the Lord made all things in the power of his majesty, for he was a great man, and he was magnified in his works, for he turned the sun backward by a miracle, and he healed the king that was sick, and he made his end to be good, and the memory of them that troubled them was rooted out.
