Praise of Nathan, David, and Solomon

Illustration for Sirach Chapter 47: Praise of Nathan, David, and Solomon

47. After him rose up Nathan to prophesy in the time of David, and David was chosen out of the people, for he saw him among the children of Israel, and he made him his servant, and he made him his servant, and he made him to ride upon the chief of the people. He played with lions as with kids, and with bears as with lambs, for he slew a giant when he was young, and took away the reproach from the people, when he lifted up his hand with the stone of the sling, and beat down the boasting of Goliath, for he delivered Israel out of the hands of the Philistines. He gave thanks to the most High with his whole heart, and loved his Maker, and he set singers before the altar, that by their voices they might make sweet melody, and that they might praise the holy name of the Lord, for he made their song to be with a joyful sound, and the temple to be glorious. The Lord forgave him his sins, and exalted his horn forever, and gave him the covenant of kings, and a throne of glory in Israel, for he made him as a light for all the world, and he gave him power to divide the sea. After him Solomon was made king, and for his sake he made a wide room for his people, for he was a man of peace, and he made the people to be at peace, and he made the people to be at peace. He made the land wide for his people, and made them to be at peace, for he made a wide room for his people, and made them to be at peace, and he made the people to be at peace. You covered the earth with dark sentences, and your praise is sounded in the isles afar off, for you were loved for your peace, and your name was famous in every corner of the world. By the multitude of parables you got an honored name, and your tongue went through the isles afar off, for you were loved for your peace, and your name was famous in every corner of the world. But you slipped with your lovers, and you gave power to your body, and you filled your hands with uncleanness, and you brought a stain upon your honor, and you caused your seed to sin, and to be divided into two kingdoms, and the Lord was wroth with your children, and made them to be a curse, and to be divided into two kingdoms. But the Lord will never reject a merciful man, neither will he destroy the works of his people, nor abolish the seed of him that loves him, for he made the posterity of David to endure, and his seed as the sun before him.
