Glory of the Sun and the Creator

Illustration for Sirach Chapter 43: Glory of the Sun and the Creator

43. The pride of the height, the clear firmament, the beauty of heaven, with his glorious shew; The sun when he appears, declaring at his rising a marvelous instrument, the work of the most High, for at noon it burns the country, and who can abide the heat thereof? A man blowing a furnace is in works of heat, but the sun burns the mountains, and sends out vapor, and at his going down, it is a great fire. How clear are the rays of the sun, for he has given him the power to burn, and moon also in all her quantity, and the stars which are a marvelous work, and the host of heaven, they glorify the Lord, and the firmament of heaven is a great glory. The beauty of heaven, the glory of the stars, and the clear firmament, for the sun when he appears, declaring at his rising a marvelous instrument, the work of the most High. The rainbow is as a light in the clouds, and the hands of the most High have set it up, for he makes the hail to descend, and the snow, and the wind, and the clouds, and the lightning, and the thunder, and all the wickedness, and all the trouble, and all the affliction, and all the distress, and all the weariness, and all the unrighteousness. When the north wind blows, it sends out a tempest, and the north wind is a great storm, for the frost also is great, and the ice is great, and the hail is great, and the clouds are great, and the thunder is great, and the lightning is great, and the wind is great, and the fire is great, and the water is great, and the earth is great, and the sea is great, and all the wickedness, and all the trouble, and all the affliction, and all the distress, and all the weariness, and all the unrighteousness. He makes the sea a great depth, and the earth a great breadth, and the wind a great blast, and the fire a great burn, and the water a great flood, and the hail a great stone, and the snow a great flake, and the ice a great chill. The wind also, and the clouds, and the lightning, and the thunder, and the snow, and the hail, and the wind, and the clouds, and the lightning, and the thunder, and all the wickedness, and all the trouble, and all the affliction, and all the distress, and all the weariness, and all the unrighteousness. By his word he makes the wind to blow, and with his breath he makes the sea to stand, and by his word he makes the wind to blow, and with his breath he makes the sea to stand. We may speak much, and yet come short, wherefore in sum, he is all, for how shall we be able to magnify him? For he is great above all his works, for the Lord is the one, and there is no other. He is the Father, and there is no other, and he is a wise one, and has no other, and he is a mighty one, and has no other, for when you glorify the Lord, exalt him as much as you can, for even yet will he far exceed, and when you can do no more, be not faint, for who can measure the mighty power of his majesty? There are yet hid greater things than these be, for we have seen but a few of his works. For the Lord has made all things, and to the godly has he given wisdom, and the Lord is the one, and there is no other.
